What Does the Word NIKA Mean?

NIKA is a Greek word meaning “victory.” In Christianity, it is a symbol of the triumph of Jesus Christ over death through His Resurrection. The inscription is traditionally linked to Emperor Constantine the Great and his victory in 312, which, according to tradition, was preceded by a vision of a cross in the sky with the words “By this, conquer!”

After his triumph, Constantine is said to have set up three monuments in Constantinople bearing the inscriptions IC, XC and NIKA. Together they read “Jesus Christ Conquers.” Over time, the word NIKA became a traditional inscription on crosses, prosphora and the Artos bread, reminding believers of Christ’s power over death and the hope of eternal life.
