What does NIKA mean?

NIKA is a Greek word meaning “to conquer” or “victor.” For Christians, it is a symbol of the victory of Jesus Christ over death and His glorious Resurrection.

According to tradition, the inscription appeared on crosses after Emperor Constantine’s victory over Maxentius in 312. Before the battle, he is said to have seen a cross in the sky with the words “By this, conquer!”, which gave him confidence. After his triumph, he honored this symbol by placing three crosses in Constantinople (formerly Byzantium), each with an inscription:

• IC on the triumphal gate
• XC on the Roman column
• NIKA on the marble pillar

Together, these words form the phrase “Jesus Christ conquers.” Later, the inscription became traditional on prosphora and artos bread, and veneration of the Cross of the Lord spread among the people.
