What Does the Inscription NIKA Symbolize?

Literally translated, this Greek word means “triumph.” It is a symbol of Christ’s victory over the forces of death. The appearance of this inscription on crosses is linked to the vision of Emperor Constantine in 312.

According to legend, a heavenly sign helped him defeat his enemy, after which the Christian cross became especially revered. In Constantinople, monuments were erected bearing parts of the phrase:

• NIKA on the stone pillar
