Translated, this word means “victor.” It is a sign of the conquest of death and a symbol of the Resurrection of Jesus. The beginning of the use of this word is linked to the year 312, when Constantine the Great won a victory after a heavenly vision of a cross. In Constantinople, the emperor set up three crosses with letters: IC on the triumphal gate, XC on the Roman column and NIKA on a marble pillar. Together they proclaim: “Jesus Christ conquers.” In time, this became part of church tradition.
